Even the shoddy blankets and amateurish fire could not make this twisting labyrinth of ice and stone a home. The wind howled on outside. The stars shone through the ceiling.

Vara'l entered and covered Maxon, phaser out as he looked around and continued his scan. He looked to the fire then after a moment, attempted to determine from it and how long it looked to have before it died out if it'd been recently started.

"Whah—?" Huddled in the corner was a young adult Klingon, their hair tangled and wild, their clothes filthy and torn. Their head snapped up. "Oh my god— oh my god, it worked! Hi!" They bounced to their feet, racing towards the officers. "Hi! Hi! Are you here to save us!? Alli, did her signal work!?"

Jidol was following closely behind and as he heard the Klingon's voice swung around. His heart was still racing from the body, they had discovered early. As she started running towards them, he took a step back, grip tightening on his phaser and waiting for a reaction from his superior.

Vara'l snapped to face the Klingon as they approached. "USS Eventide away team responding to a distress call, presumably that signal yes, stop and identify yourself." He responded then before he stepped back slightly, looked the other up and down and then asked. "Are you wounded?" And added. "We've a medical officer with us." (edited)

They skidded almost comically to a stop. "Sorry! Sorry, sorry, did I— did you— you're here to save us, right? You're here to get us off this planet? Right?" YES! The young Klingon bounced up and down on their heels. "My name is K'uvon, K'uvon Varpohl, I'm here with me and Verza and H'isll and Izo and— Alli? Did you take her with you? She sent out the signal!" This was most definitely rather subpar in comparisons to quite a lot of places she had visited before, although if it hadn't been for the circumstances they were in and perhaps with three more layers of clothing, lying down and looking at the ceiling might have been peaceful and fascinating. As it was however, she was stopped a little to the side of the main group, looking further into the cave.

Lt. Cdr. Vara'l tr'Hara | TAC BOT 11/10/2024 20:19
Vara'ls face was emotionless, sivery grey eyes fixed on the Klingon as he looked them over once again. Looked them over and..observed their age. Observed how they looked, their hope and how they talked about the human woman. This to him wasn't someone who seemed like a murderer who'd strangled someone to death, but..he wasn't a detective. He couldn't know for sure. A fact that caused part of him to push for him to keep things entirely to regulation. This was a murder suspect, protocols had been established for such things, protocol must be followed. The other stronger part of him focused on the fact they seemed young. Hell, the seemed much like a kid or a teen or something. Telim bounced like that some times. So he didn't react like the Borg part of him would have. He instead looked for injuries. Looked for them as he said. "Aye, we're here to render aid and do what we can." Vara'ls jaw worked a bit then at the question about Alli. "We did find her, she was transported to medical, if she can be helped they'll help her." He said as he decided to be truthful. "Right now, we need to focus on helping you and your other friends, do any of them need immediate medical attention?"

K'uvon Varpohl | NPC BOT 11/10/2024 20:20
"Oh.. no, not immediate. We could've used you guys a long time ago," they chuckled. "We always get put together just fine. Um— who are you supposed to be, anyway?" K'uvon turned to look at the rest of the group. Such flashy uniforms! They were different back when they arrived, weren't they.

Vara’l received a look from Maxson the moment he omitted some rather…crucial information. He wasn’t about to blurt it out, however. He knew that it was a delicate situation that was only going to get more and more delicate, “Starfleet,” He answered gruffly, “We’re…the people who help.” He echoed a sentiment from when he was younger aboard the Oklahoma. The ship had been sent to help with the Hobus evacuation, and his father was quick to tell him that, “So…we’re here to help.” (edited)

Lt. Jidol Rahl | TAC BOT 11/10/2024 20:29
Jidol just continued to stand just behind them. He had holstered his phaser by now and relaxed a little bit. He was amazed by how well they dealt with the situation. Being truthful and yet not revealing too much. He took a mental note of their tactic, he knew that it would come handy in the future, even though it might be a few years. As his heart beat finally settled again and he imagined that he could speak without his voice shaking. He took a step forward and asked: "Do you know where your friends are?"
Avatar
Lt. Cdr. Vara'l tr'Hara | TAC BOT 11/10/2024 20:32
The Romulan returned the look with grey hued eyes. The person seemed fairly young. Or well did until their comment about how they 'always get put together just fine.' His face wasn't the most expressive but well, Vara'l just..couldn't bring himself to say right now that this persons friend was dead. At least not until Sickbay confirmed the initial assessment. "Aye, we're Starfleet, from the United Federation of Planets, as has been stated..we're here to help." The Romulan then, as he glanced about the place again, looked to K'uvon once more, a question going unanswered as the Lieutenant asked something.

Lt. JG. Saren tr'Lareth-Morvar | SCI BOT 11/10/2024 20:34
Saren followed the team after making sure the youngest of them was well off to continue on the mission; still, he kept his pace at Ekhesai's, making a comparison to a guard dog all too easy. He couldn't help the instinct; after what happened with his colony, he felt the obligation to look out for those younger, smaller than him, to ensure nothing worse befalls on them. Perhaps a tad ridiculous; the cadet was an adult. But still a young one. Too young to be stumbling over a murder victim as her first assigment. Many voices pulled him out of his thoughts. K'uvon's appearance made the scientist... not tense, but alert. The officers in front of him seemed to have the encounter under control, so Saren decided to just stay put - and watch what was going on behind their group.

Lt. One of One | SCI BOT 11/10/2024 20:39
One stayed behind with Saren, near the opening of the cave. While Khanwi rushed past them into the comfort of warmth, they were fine with the cold, and were content to not crowd the person that had been found inside. There was much to be gleaned from people-watching, after all, and they were much better at that bit than the people-engaging-with.

Starfleet, huh... "H'isll and Verza went looking for food," K'uvon said, pointing down one of many tunnels. "I don't know where Izo went. She wanders off sometimes!"
Avatar
Lt. Dagis | OPS BOT 11/10/2024 20:42
Trailing behind, Dagis kept her eyes and ears open, hoping and almost praying (almost) that they wouldn't come across another lifeless body. She was gonna have to talk to her therapist about this, wasn't she? Stumbling across a random Klingon was not on her to do list, but neither was responding to a distress call, so as the group talked the Ferengi listened in silence, paying attention as best as possible despite something in the back of her mind telling her she might've forgotten to feed the frog before she left... Oops.

Vara'l checked his tricorder scans and considered the situation then. "The situation is.. still potentially hazardous." He said as he considered the situation. "..Given you know more about the area then us, a guide may be helpful though if the situation becomes too hazardous we may wish to beam you to our ship for your own safety, just so that's clear." With that out of the way, Vara'l then asked. "K'uvon, do you know where your friends tend to go looking for food, within the caves, what we'd be looking for?" The Romulan inquired as he looked to get more information. "And regarding your other friend, do you know if they've stuck to the caves other times they've wandered or if they do go out into the snow?"

"Into the tunnels, then?" If Ekhesai were enough of a nerd to be acquainted with a 400+ year old musical, she would've hummed a jolly little tune about going into the woods to lift the spell, to visit Mother, to fetch the things... But she was not. So she did not. Boo. (edited)

Jidol wasn't too much a fan of going further into the cave. He liked flying and not being stuck underground for ages. But if he had to help search for K'uvon's friends, he would be one of the first to go. He liked himself a good mystery and this one turned out to be an amazing one. But he was still glad that he had all of the others by his side. "Lead the way, I'll be right behind you." With one hand on his phaser, he followed behind the cadet, who had been appointed their guide.

One stayed behind too, even as most other people ventured deeper into the caves. They'd debated on giving their coat to the Klingon, but Five had them beat. "Are you good with cold, too?" They asked them quietly.

"Got no response from the Eventide, how is everyone else's comms?" The ACTO asked then before he looked about the place and double checked for any signs of something.. wrong. While he did that, he snapped out his tricorder once more. He'd then scanned for anything that might suggest why there was communications interference.

Lt. Five of Eight | OPS BOT 11/10/2024 21:17
"Something like that." Five shrugged, unbothered. "I'll be alright, don't worry.." Hm? "No comms, huh?" An attempted message— "Five to Eventide, do you copy?"— received no reply.

"A broken communications array, and no communication with our ship, on a planet that does not exist. Let me go outside to try, though I will stay within view." And One did just that, going just outside the mouth of the cave to ask Eventide if they could hear them.

"I'm scanning to try and determine a potential cause now." Vara'l said then as he looked to his tricorder and moved his Phaser up closer to a ready standby position. "Everyone should stay alert." A thought struck him then, he tapped his combadge once more. "ACTO tr'Hara to Lt. JG. Saren tr'Lareth-Morvar, Communications test, can you hear me?"

"No response.." He observed then as he checked his tricorder and frowned. "No specific sign of interference either, nothing like any definite indication of a natural cause or a manufactured one.." Vara'l frowned then. This didn't feel right at all, he switched his tricorder to a life signs scan. If they couldn't talk to them, did the tricorder still detect everyones lifesigns, he wondered.

Upon coming back into the cave, One confirmed they'd not had a response either. "To summarize, we are stuck on a planet of which there are no records, with people who seem to both be deeply used to their circumstances while being woefully underprepared for them. There is no possibility for us to communicate with our ship, and the communications array we found the body with-" One had missed Vara'l treading carefully around that particular subject, "- was made completely inoperable too." Then, a small pause as they thought. "I suggest we all move down to where the others are, including the native. Sticking together will do more good than staying in small groups will."

Vara'l looked to K'uvon. "I didn't wish to alarm you as to her state though my assurance was truthful." He started off before he then added. "She was beamed to sickbay, If she can be helped, they will help her, as I stated..." He then trailed off then and looked to the other Liberated Borg. "But given what has just been said, I'd..suggest to prepare for the worst..I'm sorry." He sighed. "I apologize, my choice of words was poor there." He'd not lied, but he'd stumbled into using one of the worst ways to tread around a subject. So many ways it could be taken. Hell, if read into it could have even suggested he'd not even encountered her..or well her body. He'd need to make a note of this, remember it for the future.

Having admittedly not fully paid attention to who had been saying what, Dagis had been keenly aware that the group had been trying to avoid breaking the news to the other survivors quite so soon or suddenly, in quite so perilous conditions, so when the truth was finally told the Klingon's reaction was hardly surprising. Stepping forwards, the exponentially shorter Ferengi looked between the Commander and K'uvon with a sympathetic look on her face, not wanting to step too close to the stranger but wanting to show she cared all the same. "We never try to lie to anyone, we just try to judge what the best thing to tell someone in the moment is, and we didn't want to cause you any alarm or upset. I'm really sorry."

"Who is He?" Might as well be the person making this guy uncomfortable again. One had very little trouble taking on the role, if they were honest; the responses of others to their demeanour or words did not confound them more or less when they were feeling positive over negative emotions.

"AZ! He — he gets really angry sometimes, and we knew the communicator would make him mad, and Izo wanted to do it, but Alli said. No. She's the oldest, and she's tired. But it's okay! We just have to be nice. Maybe— maybe if we're nice, it won't hurt so terribly this time." K'uvon stuck a stick in the dirt, prodding at a rock. "That's what I try to do, anyway. But H'isll, his temper's almost as bad as AZ's, ha.."

"AZ has power over you, then. He is responsible for your hardship, and he causes you pain." One didn't like this AZ individual. "He must have access to a lot of technology that you clearly do not, to be able to revive people when they have passed. He would be technologically advanced enough to cut off all methods of utilising communication devices." One was never very good at emotions, but they were very, very certain they didn't like the one they were having right now. They turned to their fellow officers. "If I may, I would like to insist upon rejoining the larger team now."

Four tilted their head. They had mostly been guarding the rear and made sure no one else was coming toward the remaining contingent here. Four tilted their head. Something was rather odd about this entire place. They could not put their finger on it. They stood near Vara'l as they covered him with their own phaser. "Lieutenant Commander, perhaps we should go in front. Just incase there are any attacks from the unidentified lifesign, potentially this Az, we should be the one to take the hit first, rather than an essential officer." Four said matter of factly. They looked to Vara'l as Four surmised it was the most logical thing to do, and their purpose of defense was paramount in missions like these.

"Establishing rear and front Overwatch is tactically sound, you cover front, I'll cover rear if we need to move." When Izoro came in, Vara'l looked to them and then looked to Four. He then moved over to them and quietly proceeded to say. "It'd appear the situation has developed, stay on alert all the same, given statements made it's logical to assume there's still danger here, keep a eye on the route further in." He then moved to assume part of a defensive permitter keeping a eye on the entrance Izoro came through and part of the cave. "Greetings, I'm Lieutenant Commander Vara'l tr'Hara, as the Lieutenant has said we're Starfleet." He paused. They weren't really going to force them to come along (realistically, they were a bit too scrawny for that) but they would prefer if everyone was in one place so nobody else would die alone due to AZ's temper.

Not that they didn't look at everyone that way but it felt just slightly more pointed. They recognized this, and then thought to themselves, "Initialize Emotional Suppression Prototype Protocol 0.5". Four felt their mind slow and their emotions calm before they returned their attention to the unknown individual. Upon hearing the order they would move to the front. "Of course Lieutenant Commander, we will do as you instruct." Four lowered their phaser and kept it towards the tunnel Izoro came from. Not entirely sure what was coming and trying to piece together what exactly was going on. They kept their overwatch tight and their senses open.

Vara'l looked to the Lieutenant. While his additions to what had been said had been minor, he'd added some information through what he said. It had also seemed interesting to him they'd not even addressed his clarifications. He'd specifically mentioned the distress call and the communications issue. Clarifications he'd hoped might have drawn a reaction..but hadn't. These were things he noted alongside how the Lieutenant had spoken to him. Not that he suspected their conduct had affected if the duo would have reacted to his additions or no. No matter, especially given the fact this wasn't a officer in his department, there were other things that needed to be addressed. He had moved to ask a question about the thoughts and dreams thing, but well, that question was asked so he listened out for the answer as he turned to Lieutenant Commander Maxson. "Something's affected Comms, we're unable to reach the Eventide at all, attempted communications between your group and ours was also affected." (edited)

"Who are you?" was the first thing said by Saren upon his resurfacing back to the main cave and seeing an unfamiliar face, Romulan-typical mistrust and caution rearing their ugly heads. Was this person the aforementioned Izoro?.. "And what is this cabin you are speaking about?"

This was getting... a little crowded, for One's tastes. "We are about to go back into the tundra to seek out a cabin. We can exchange information there, and come up with a plan to get back to the Eventide." Ignore the lack of coat, please, so they wouldn't have to explain.

"You can call me Izoro. Izoro Kirran. And! It's a cabin! It's filled with food, and it's warm, and it'll be perfect to stay the night in if you're really stuck here." Izoro pulled H'isll and Verza in. "It'll be great. You'll see! You'll see."

"It's messing with you again, Zoro." He snapped his hand out of hers. "You can't— we aren't walking halfway around the planet for a plateful of dirt and worms..."

He made a face. "Starving."

"Shouldn't we get more information, first? Just in case this does turn out to be a trap." Sorry, One, he knows you're crowded and uncomfy, but..

Four heard what Izoro had said. They found their statement highly improbable. There were shadows of such buildings in the distance when they first arrived but...a trek across the planet? It all seemed rather implausible. They also had no gear, no food, no water. Four called back as they kept their focus on the passageway they were assigned to. "We can take you back to our starbase. Without proper food, water, or gear, the trek across the planet makes no logical sense, Izoro. We will provide all necessary commodities for the entirety of your group. It is not something too diffcult for us to do. We should return back to a potential evac point. If we have all the life signs initially scanned on this planet before arriving it is prudent to leave. We have what we came for." Four wasn't one to over stay their mission objective. As well, this place felt...odd. All of the machinery, the close quarters, it all felt like home, but...it was cold. Home was warm and hot with the bodies of the collective. The power of their shared consciousness. This felt like death. This felt...like a tomb. A place that should never be entered unless you wish to join with it.

"It's not far. It's not that far. It's only a few minutes. I'll answer any questions you have, but please, let's just.. go? Please?" Izoro hovered near the cave entrance.

"I agree with Five, we need more data." A thought then proceeded to strike him. He then snapped out his tricorder and scanned his phaser as he followed a thought and checked to see if other tech had been affected. If it was just the Communications that had been disrupted,well..it'd be one less thing that concerned Vara'l.

Tricorder and phaser were fine. Lucky!

"We are no closer to answers here than we are anywhere else, and if there is a cabin, I would much rather be there. If there isn't one, we will have learned new information, which we will not if we stay here. I will go with the group, but must voice my preference for moving elsewhere." Ironically, One didn't usually proclaim to be the athletic type, to the point where their physicians scolded them for it. They just really wanted to be out of this crowded cave.

If there was one disadvantage to Cardassians having cold blood, is that they are weak in cold, the Bajoran side only making it partly better. Kya took a shaky breath to look at the group, of course having been here the whole time she was thinking over the whole ordeal. “Why Azreal? Did you name it that? Or did it pick it for itself? And why a name descended from human Hebrew?” (edited)

"I don't like this, but we really don't seem to have much choice," he replied to One's words. Staying here and refusing to follow would only agitate the people of this hellscape more; certainly not something they wanted to do. "I just can't help but worry that it could be some death trap."

Lt. Cdr. Vara'l tr'Hara | TAC BOT 11/10/2024 23:00
Now he'd confirmed that, Vara'l was..less concerned. He was still very much concerned about this situation though. Just less so. Not that that showed at all though, it wasn't something he'd ever managed to emote well. At least, it wasn't something the post-liberation Vara'l have ever managed to emote well. So as he'd scanned them, up until the moment he finished, it probably seemed like he'd agreed with Five, twitched then scanned his phaser with his tricorder. All with a resting face that if anything seemed fairly reserved or stern. * "If we have any data on the potential identity or otherwise the potential cause of what's caused our communications to-" *He looked to the Lieutenant Commander. "..Who's Azrael..If I'm right, isn't that something to do with a terran based faith or something?"
Avatar
Lt. One of One | SCI BOT 11/10/2024 23:00
"Azrael is AZ, Commander," One supplied. They'd been able to put that one together, at least.

Her expression shifted, then, head inclining gently as she considered the question. “We created it as an angel. An angel with blood on its wings, but an angel nonetheless. I'll be able to think more clearly once I'm inside and warm."

Lt. Cdr. Kya Pok | TAC BOT 11/10/2024 23:03
She hummed. “I’m a woman of faith, and knowing about others faiths is important. Azreal is typically an angel of death, responsible for the transporting of souls.” She tilted her head at Izoro. “Ah! I see, that makes sense.”

"I concur, though the name's one that has symbolism." He responded as he then frowned. "It's not something I elected to retain following the conclusion of a study into faith's." The Romulan looked to Izoro then back to Kya. "Ah." Came his response then as his question was answered. "Created?" He asked. "Its...a robot?" Given the pieces he'd had up until that point, Vara'ls face darkened a bit as he had made some..logical leaps. Or well...made some assumptions.

Two lights in the near distance, like a beacon across the tundra. The survivor's heads snapped towards it.

"I believe this entire planet is a death trap, Lieutenant," One told Saren, while starting to move further towards the cave entrance, still not wearing a coat. "AZ, or Azrael, is the perpetrator of it, and the individual keeping us from contacting Eventide. We are no safer here than we are elsewhere, nor are we more informed for it. Moving is the straightforward option, in that it gives us an immediate objective." Why was One doing the talking. Please someone take the lead, they were done being the group leader actually. The eyes of their fellow officers were starting to feel like something prickly.

Four continued to keep guard at the passage way. Their eyes drifting to the different machines and how they all intertwinned with everything. The stark urge to connect to them began to make its way into their mind. They typically had this feeling whenever they were around machinery, but to see such Borg like machinery, with such complexity again, it made their eyes linger for a moment. With this amount of machinery...and with assimilation protocols...the entity dubbed Azrael would be aligned with such goals. Four then realized that would countermand an order from their Queen Rilek and D'nal of no assimilation of other beings...yet...didn't The Queen hold station over both? Before Four lost themselves too much in their thinking they heard the exclamation of the cabin being found. It wasn't that close before...was it? Their sensors wouldn't have been able to miss that amount of organic matter...Four though kept their phaser towards the same passageway. Not having been told to move, so they continued to stand watch.

All four of the survivors took off in the cabin direction. Well. That's that decision made, then.

Four nodded and followed. As they did though they looked toward Vara'l. "Lieutenant Commander, we request to stay outside the cabin. We require no sustenance and believe it best if we kept watch outside. We also do not wish to take up space within the building, as to facilitate rest among the others. Is this agreeable?" They kept their eyes towards the rear as they walked. Their phaser raised as they continued to keep a lookout.

"Which makes the promise of safety even more suspicious," he chuckled somewhat humorlessly. "Well, let's go and see this oasis then..." And that he did, leading his puppeteer to a nice segway for an obligatory event break.

"Nobody would object to your taking up space within the Cabin, just to say.." The ACTO responded as he considered the others request and continued to move, phaser raised as he watched their surroundings. "As to your request, there is something to say for having someone on watch, though I've found watch rotations to be more efficient." His jaw worked a bit. "I'm unaware as to how long it's been since your last regeneration cycle, I'm amenable however to modulating your watch length to account for all factions and what'd be most efficient." He responded then. "In other words, partially agreeable yes, though watch placement and position may depend on the cabins layout and the environment around it." Vara'l then said, conscious about the fact he'd used a good few words where not too many would have done. "And the fact that others may wish to take watch rotations will need to be considered." He said as they headed to the cabin and into the event break.
